Every June 24th, the city of Cusco, Peru, becomes the epicenter of one of the most important celebrations on the Andean calendar: Inti Raymi, or the Festival of the Sun. This ancestral ceremony is one of the most emblematic celebrations of the Inca legacy, honoring the Sun god,Ìýthe most important deity in the Andean world — regarded as the source of life, energy, and wisdom.Ìý
The celebration was established in the 15th century by Inca Pachacútec to mark the winter solstice and to signal the start of the Andean new year. Originally, it included dances, offerings, and rituals to give thanks to the sun and pray for the agricultural future. In 1944, it was revived as a symbolic ceremony that has since been performed annually with a grand spectacle at the Sacsayhuamán fortress. Ìý
